Paid ads vs organic: where should a small business start?

Both work, but not at the same speed or in the same way. Here's how to decide where to put your first pound.

Paid ads

It's a common crossroads: do you spend on ads for quick results, or build organic reach for the long game? The honest answer is that they do different jobs, and the right starting point depends on what you need right now.

Paid ads: fast, but you pay for it

Ads put you in front of the right people quickly. Turn them on, and enquiries can start within days. The moment you turn them off, the traffic stops. Think of ads as a tap, not a well.

Organic: slower, but it compounds

Content, social and SEO take longer to pay off, but the results build on themselves. A post or a page you created months ago can still be bringing in customers today, without any extra spend.

So where do you start?

If you need enquiries this month, start with ads, but only once you have somewhere good to send the clicks. If you're playing the long game and cash is tight, start with content. Most businesses end up doing both, with ads driving short-term results while organic builds the foundation.

Ads are a tap you pay to keep running. Organic is a well you dig once.

Whichever you choose, the same rule applies: don't spend on getting people to a message or a page that doesn't convert. Fix the offer first, then turn on the traffic.
